April 1957 Nationally According to a recent report in the New York Times, the Stalinist faction in the Polish Communist Party, in its struggle against the more liberal elements, has used anti-Semitic appeals to such an extent and so successfully, that the Polish government is willing to let the bars down on Jewish emigration from Poland. It is expected that 25,000 or more Jewish professional and workingmen will emigrate from Poland as soon as they can. There are also 11,000 Jewish refugees from Egypt and an estimated 50,000 Jews left in Egypt who will probably have to emigrate before the year is over. Considerable numbers will probably have to leave North Africa as well. A great many Jews as individuals have made financial and other contributions to the Crusade for Freedom effort and the Emergency Rescue Fund through local United Jewish Funds. In celebration of Passover, the American Broadcasting Company will present a National Television Tribute to Passover, a special network telecast emanating from the House of Living Judaism in New York City, the home of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, parent body of 540 Reform temples in the United States and Canada, Sunday, 5:30-6 p.m. EST. Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, President of the UAHC, along with personalities Eli Wallach and Bess Myerson will conduct the seder. Others on the show include Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Lyons and their four sons, Meyer Levin, author of Compulsion, a Hungarian refugee family, and the choir of the HUC-JIR School of Sacred Music. Locally The Young Matrons Division of the UJF will present an intriguing musical skit called ‘Help Parade’ at the Wednesday evening affair of April 10, at Ilonkas Provincial House. The Program committee of the event is Mrs. David Roth, Mrs. Isadore Gurevitz and Mrs. Sanford Stern who also cooperated in the writing of the clever songs with Mrs. Norman Meizlish, Mrs. Sam Lubin, and Mrs. Mayer Rosenfeld. Participating in the skit are Mesdames Bernard Byrnes, Bernard Zell, Frank Nutis, Mendy Snyder, Thomas Kaplin, Ben Smilack, Allen Gundersheimer Jr., Miss Ruth Tarcov and Stephen Blumberg. Mrs. Sam Franklin is the accompanist. Send in reservation or phone to Mrs. Bernard Frank, BE. 1-6482. A $100 Minimum Dinner is on schedule for Thursday, April 11 at the home of Mrs. Henry Gurevitz, 185 S. Columbia Rd., at 5:30 p.m. The committee has planned a dinner, catered by Beulah, as well as a colorful evening. In the United States the goal for the Emergency Fund in dollars is $100,000,000, in Columbus it is $260,000. That’s over and above the Regular Fund.
