Harriet Kallenberg Research Volunteer COLUMBUS JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY February 1957 Nationally A member of President Eisenhower’s Committee on Refugee Relief, who just returned from an overseas survey tour, has warned, "A new and ugly DP era is in the making unless the emigration of Hungarian refugees is promptly accelerated." "Not since DP camps doted the map of Europe have there been so many Jewish refugees fleeing from tyranny and terror", he said. "In addition to some 16,500 Jewish refugees from Hungarian Communism, thousands of Jews have already been expelled from Egypt, and the signs are that Nasser is determined that all of Egypt’s 50,000 Jews must go. The White House is opposed to inviting Egyptian and Israeli leaders to Washington to discuss their dispute with President Eisenhower, "while Israel forces remain on Egyptian territory" That was revealed herein an exchange of letters between Rep. Victor L. Anfuso, New York Democrat, and Bryee N. Harlow Administrative Assistant to the President.
Locally Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, Executive Vice-President of the Development Corp for Israel pointed out that purchases of Israel Bonds are up. Jacob H. Gilbert, retiring Chairman of the Columbus Campaign reported 565 purchases totaling $179,950, for 1956 is up over the prior year. Dr. Schwartz paid high tribute to Golda Meir, Foreign Minister of Israel, who is now concluding a visit to the United States. In addition to attending to her arduous UN duties, Mrs. Meir visited twenty-five communities in the U.S. and Canada. Her "dynamism", he said, "proved a great stimulus to the bond campaign and to the response toward Israel evoked from American Jewry".
Young Adults group of the Center announced that they are sponsoring the third annual inter-city "Winter Whirl" dance on Saturday night, February 2, at the Center. Refreshments, entertainment, and music by Leo Kraus, will highlight the evening activity. Admission is $1.75 for non-members and $1.25 for members.
The Auxiliary of the Columbus Jewish Home for the Aged will meet Sunday, 2 p.m., at Ahavas Sholom Synagogue. Mrs. Harry Bender will give the opening prayer and Mrs. Isaac Nutis will preside. Plans will be made to entertain the residents on Chamisha Oser B’Shavat, (Arbor Day). Mr. Abe A. Wolman was re-elected to serve as President of the Home. The honor was bestowed upon him again in view of the devoted services which he has performed so efficiently.
Harry Jarkey, who has performed in local night clubs and private programs for Jewish organizations will go into his comic act next month as a highlight of the Temple Tiferith Israel Sisterhood Birthday Project Ball, February 3rd. He will draw for the ticket to reveal the winners of the vacation trip for two at Grossinger’s Resort.
Plans are being made by Herbert Cummins, Chairman and Ralph Shapiro and Harry Sherbet, Vice-Chairmen, for the B’nai B’rith Lodge’s annual "Cadillac Capers" scheduled for Sunday evening, Feb 10, in the main ballroom of the Deshler-Hilton Hotel. The dance will feature Ted Goetz and his orchestra. A men’s style show, utilizing B’nai B’rith models, will be staged by The Union Company. All members who contribute $100 to the B’nai B’rith Agencies Fund will be admitted free; all others are invited at $3.50 per couple.
Raanana, junior affiliate of National Women Mizrachi, will sponsor a card party to raise funds for the Children’s Emergency Campaign to help meet Israel’s present needs. The affair is Feb. 12th, 8:30 p.m. at the homes of Mrs. Seyman Stern, 2930 Kingsbury Ct. and Mrs. Sandford Kayne, 2239 E. Livingston Ave. Tickets are 75c.
Columbus Chapter of Senior Hadassah announced that its big style show in cooperation with F & R Lazarus would be held Wednesday, February 27, 8 pm, at the Jewish Center. Two capable chairmen of Hadassah’s Medical Center Committee, Mrs. Robert Hallet and Mrs. Frank Glassman have planned the colorful evening. Hadassah members whose husbands are associated with the medical profession will serve as hostesses during the evening. This will be an entertaining evening but more important an ideal opportunity to aid Hadassah’s Medical Center in Israel. Admission is $5 in cash, or $170 face value in tax stamps. The entire amount donated that evening will be sent to the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Israel.
The "Mr. & Mrs. Club" has a "Splash Party" in the Center’s indoor swimming pool Tuesday. A business meeting is first on the 8:30 evening agenda. Lenny Bloom, Chairman of the Planning Committee, invites all young married couples to join the group. For more information, call Ronnie Cahn at the Center. The group’s New Year’s party attracted twenty-five couples.
Martin’s "Kosher" Foods at Chesterfield and East Broad is offering Minute Steaks (no gristle), this week at 79c a pound, Koshered Pan readied Fryers at 73c a pound and Choice or Prime Rib Steaks at 79c a pound. Other Market Basket Specials are Heinz Catsup, large bottle, 23c, Frozen 10oz Birdseye strawberries, 25c and two-dozen Florida juice oranges for 75c.
Adult Basketball League opens Tuesday with a full roster of players. Sponsors were assigned to teams (no charge to Sponsors) in recognition of past support of Center programs. The opening contest at 7:15 p.m. Dick Phalin’s Kenny Loans meet Bob Grad’s Ohio Monarchs. At 8:15, Marv Katz’s Superior Roofing plays Grove City Furniture, headed by Buddy Geichman, while Irv Flox’s Columbus Steel meets Myer Weisman’s Sully Loans at 9:15. Larry Gordon, League Chairman, will throw up the first ball.
"When Your Children Ask", is the timely subject to be discussed at the Council of Jewish Women Educational Tea, Wednesday, 1:00 p.m. Edward Rydman, Director of Planned Parenthood Council, will be the Guest Speaker for the afternoon. His discussion will cover children from the time they are taken to school until they are married.
Temple Israel’s Annual "Kids Night" party comes up Thursday 6:15 p.m. at the Temple. This event is sponsored by the Brotherhood. Asher Moser is Chairman and planned a supper every youngster will enjoy, plus entertainment featuring Flippo the Clown and Bill King, Juggler and Magician.
