SEPTEMBER, 1957

INTERNATIONAL

"All the talk that Soviet Russia may permit emigration is for the time being wishful thinking". According to Boris Smolar of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, as long as Khrushchev rules, there is no chance of emigration for Soviet Jewry. The hostility toward Israel in the Soviet media has intensified since the Syrian-Soviet agreement was signed in Moscow.

It has been 2 years since the discovery of oil in Israel and the oilfields in Heletz and Brur. The 600,000 barrels a year from the Israeli oil fields only amounts to 6% of Jewish state’s needs. Lately, small quantities of oil have come to Israel from Iran. Recently, the Soviet Union stopped supplying Israel so that Israel is dependant on oil from Argentina and the United States. Further oil exploration in the Dead Sea area is a necessity for Israel to meet its oil needs.

NATIONAL

"Events in Little Rock have overshadowed the fact that more laws against racial and religious discrimination have been enacted this year by the states than ever before. There are 25 states which prohibit discrimination in places of public accommodation. Various states acted to prevent discrimination in the employment of teachers, discrimination in housing, in hotels and resorts. Jewish groups watching developments on the discrimination front consider 1957 a very successful year as far as legislation against racial and religious bias is concerned.

"Madwoman opens tonight"

if you are still undecided on how to spend your Saturday or Sunday evenings this weekend you won’t be disappointed in seeing the Gallery teens production of the Madwoman of Chaillot. You are not likely to regret spending 75cents for a seat or $1 if you are not a center member. The fact that virtually all of the actors and actresses are apprentices and members of the Center’s teenage drama group, does not reduce the quality of the production which has been carefully prepared and tirelessly rehearsed during the last 2 months under the direction of an experienced showman, Gallery Players’ Larry Kent.
