March 1957

World and Nation Maybe the Arabs are waking up, but they have been very slow. Slavery, polygamy, feudalism that was there a thousand years ago is still there. Even the plagues of Egypt, to which the bible refers, seem to be there. Some eighty percent of Egyptians suffer from preventable bacterial disease of one kind or another. It is noted that the Arabs are one of the most favored people today. Iraq receives some $400,000,000 annually in oil royalties, Saudi Arabia about the same, and little Kuweit, which has no more people than Omaha, Nebraska, receives several hundred million annually in oil royalties. In oil-rich Iraq, with plenty of land—it’s about the size of Texas; most of the Arabs are poor sharecroppers and, according to the New York Times, only keep about one-fifteenth of the crop for themselves. Think how the Jews help their suffering brethren with UJA contributions and Israel Bonds and wonder where are the organizations to relieve suffering Arabs?

NEW YORK (JTA) – A resurgence of Ku Klux Klan activities in Florida aimed equally at Jews and Negroes, was reported in the New York Herald Tribune in the first of a series of articles by Robert S. Bird, a correspondent who made a personal investigation of KKK developments. In a report of a cross-burning night meeting at Iverness, Florida, north of Miami, Bird says that violent diatribes were delivered against the very existence of the Jewish people, who were blamed for a variety of matters including integration. One unidentified speaker told the crowd of several hundred Floridians that "a Jew is white on the outside and black on the inside" and "we’ve got to deprive him of his voting rights and segregate him to the same second class citizenship that the n----r thinks he has but doesn’t really have"

Locally Mr. and Mrs. Hyman Weinberg, 1092 Geers Ave., announce the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Kenneth Edward, March 23, 9:30 a.m., at Tifereth Israel Temple. Family and friends are invited to Kiddush following services.

Miss Phyllis Dolinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Dolinger, 888 S Remington Rd., became the bride of Walter Bernstein, son of Mrs. Joseph Lenter of Union, N. J. and the late Morris Bernstein. The double ring ceremony took place at 5:30 p.m. March 10 in Agudas Achim Synagogue with Rabbi Samuel W. Rubenstein officiated. Following the ceremony

Hostesses Mrs. Donn Spector, Miss Marilyn Solomon, Mrs. James Teitelbaum and Miss Miriam Schottenstein gave a reception for the couple in the synagogue social hall.

Mr. and Mrs. Don A. Shusterman announce the marriage of their daughter, Harriet Barbara, to Dr. Richard Maitin, son of Mrs. Max Maitin and the late Mr. Maitin. The double ring ceremony took place last Sunday in the vestry of Temple Israel, with Dr. Jerome D. Folkman officiating. The bride’s only attendant was her sister, Mrs. Barry Turner. Bernard Morganstern was the groom’s best man. Dr. Maitin is a lieutenant in the United States Navy and has just returned from overseas duty in Japan. A family luncheon was held at Ilonka’s Provincial House following the 10:30 a.m. ceremony. The couple left for San Diego, California, where Lt. Maitin will be stationed until November.

As a tribute to his half-century of bowling, the Summer Mixed Bowling League has singularly honored Sam H. Solomon. It will be known as the "Sam Solomon Fifty Year League". The summer crowd again will bowl on Tuesday evenings at the Center. Lil Plotnick and Marty Kaufher are organizing the 1957 rosters. Any bowlers interested in joining the league should leave their names (and averages) at the Center bowling desk.

The Council of Jewish Women’s Nearly New Shop will be better than ever because of a generous offer by Al Jensen of Jensen’s Cleaners, 2996 E. Main St. All Council members have been saving their used clothing, china, bric-a-brac, etc. Occasionally, however, they have something extra nice that only needs a good cleaning to make it an especially valuable contribution to the shop. Mr. Jensen has offered to clean such garments free of charge. A barrel will be placed in the Jensen store, labeled Nearly New Shop (not to be used as a general pick-up spot) to drop a special dress, coat, or suit to be cleaned and made ready for sale at a higher price than would otherwise be possible. Watch for the Chronicle and Council Bulletin for days when other regular merchandise can be brought to the Nearly New Shop at 213 E Main.

Irving Davidson, Jewish humorist and wit who will appear at the Jewish Center Tuesday evening, is known as the "Jewish Ripley" because of his lectures on Jewish historical oddities. As he regards the fact that sorrow laden Jewish people have a sense of humor as the greatest Jewish historical oddity of them all, he has made a specialized study of Jewish wit and humor. He has written numerous articles and is now completing a manuscript on Jewish humor. Everywhere he speaks, ripples of laughter quickly grow into waves of merriment. The Jewish Center in cooperation with B’nai B’rith sponsors his appearance. The public is invited. Admission is $1.50 per person (students, 75c).

A new teenage girls gym class was launched Monday under supervision of Mandy Stellman. This class is designed to give an all around experience in all forms of athletics. The program will include exercise, skipping, dancing (folk and social), trampoline and golf instruction. Planning committee for the program includes Sandy Plotnick, chairman; Rosalyn Kirkel, Julie Pailet, Wendy Abrams, Sue Schwartz, and Elaine Zeff. Time for the class is 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. each Monday.

National Council of Jewish Women delegates and alternates of last weeks Washington D.C. convention will recreate convention atmosphere at the next program of Council Tuesday, 12:30 p.m. at Temple Israel. The convention attendees eager to share so many new ideas with members will present a clever skit. Columbus made a splendid showing in D.C. winning first prize for best exhibit depicting recent Volunteer Service Program with a beautiful poster created by Mrs. Seymour Weil. Mrs. Milton Parker, local membership chairman was given an award for exceeding the Columbus quota for new members. This award was presented at a special party attended by congressmen and other national dignitaries.

Calling themselves the "Drill" team, dentist, Dr. Norman Shiff, Dr. Harold Monett, Dr. Jack Marx, Dr. Mitchell Goodman, Dr. Don A. Shusterman, and Dr. A. Bertram Thall form a new UJF campaign unit. The unit co-chaired by Dr. Mitchell Goodman and Dr. Don A. Shusterman meeting at the home of Dr. Micthell got off to a flying start with the 1957 campaign at this initial meeting. They registered an overall increase of 59% in its gift and a 144% increase in its gifts to the Emergency Rescue Fund to help with relief from calamities and immigration problems affecting innocent Jewish victims and now reaching staggering proportions.

The first 200 B’nai B’rith Women who enter the Zion Chapter Cooking School Tuesday noon at the Jewish Center, will receive an extra special door prize, stated Mrs. Joseph Schecter, general chairman of the afternoon. In co-operation with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., Zion Chapter is presenting at its paid up membership function, "Food For Thought". "Betty Newtons" of the Gas Co., will demonstrate the newest ideas in culinary arts. A complete dinner menu will be prepared in a "Youngstown Kitchen" built on stage of the auditorium by Al Solove and Herman Siegel of City Tile Co. Among the prizes to be awarded are a four piece Wm. Rogers silver tea service, a garbage disposer, a Philco clock radio, thirty baskets of groceries, four piece Hallite aluminum ware; ten prizes of six months supply of AD; plus door prizes to all members.
