JEWISH JOURNEY FROM MITTELSINN TO COLUMBUS TOPIC OF JUNE CJHS GENEALOGY MEETING
"Mittelsinn to Columbus:  our Jewish Journey" is the topic of a presentation by Garry Stein, scheduled for the June meeting of the Columbus Jewish Historical Society Genealogy Group.  The public is invited to attend the meeting, to be held at 7 p.m., June 6 at Temple Israel, 5419 East Broad Street.
Stein, born in Columbus among the first of the "war babies," is a sixth generation descendent of German Jewish immigrants to the U.S.  He has been actively involved in Jewish genealogy for more than 11 years.  Serving as Vice President of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada, he is also currently on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies.
In addition to his extensive research on his own family tree, Stein has developed a special interest in early Jewish migration patterns to North America and in the genealogy of the Torah.  He has been a writer, instructor and guest lecturer on the subject of Jewish genealogy at a number of venues in the U.S. and Canada.
"I continue to be amazed by the threads of Jewish history covering several waves of immigration over many generations, over a wide range of shtetles throughout
the Pale-Settlement, Germany and Russia," he said.  Stein will discuss his study of the immigration of his family, through his research into information of births, deaths and marriages and into family names.  Having recently come into possession of\ three family scrapbooks covering a period of time between 1910 and 1930, he has acquired photographs of his Great-Aunt Edna Helene Hirsch Herman and her friends and family
from that time.  "It includes pictures of the War Bonds parade, the World War I Victory Parade through downtown Columbus, high school canoe trips on the Olentangy River and picnics to local farms and Buckeye Lake," he said.
Stein will also share information he has gathered about Mittelsinn from generations ago compared to today.
The Columbus Jewish Historical Society Genealogy Group holds monthly meetings to assist those interested in researching their family genealogy.  Meetings are open to the public.  The group is chaired by Joseph Cohen.  For more information, please call the CJHS at 614-238-6977, or e-mail the Society at cjhs@tcjf.org.
